With more than 20 years of experience in commercial construction, Plescia has seen how many project challenges begin before crews arrive on site. In his view, unclear scopes, unrealistic schedules, incomplete information, and mismatched expectations can create problems that become harder and more expensive to solve once work is underway.

“A strong project starts well before construction begins,” said Plescia. “The earlier everyone understands the scope, expectations, responsibilities, and potential risks, the better positioned the team is to execute.”

That perspective was shaped in part by an early experience in Plescia’s career as a business owner. His company took on a project that was not properly scoped or priced, which hurt margins and created avoidable pressure during execution.

Rather than treating the experience as an isolated setback, Plescia used it to strengthen the company’s approach to evaluating future opportunities. He placed greater emphasis on clearer scopes, disciplined pricing, stronger qualification, and more direct conversations before committing to a project.

The lesson, he says, was not that difficult projects should be avoided. It was that complexity needs to be understood early.

“There is a big difference between a challenging project and a project that starts with basic issues that were never properly addressed,” Plescia said. “The goal is to identify those issues while there is still time to work through them.”

Plescia believes project selection should be viewed as part of construction management rather than simply as a business development decision. A contractor may be capable of performing the work, but that does not automatically mean the scope, timeline, budget, or working relationship is structured for a strong outcome.

He also sees early communication as one of the most important parts of that process. Contractors, owners, design teams, and other project participants may enter a project with different assumptions, and those assumptions can become sources of friction if they remain unspoken.

“Some of the most valuable conversations happen before there is a problem,” Plescia said. “It is much easier to address a difficult question early than to discover months later that two sides were working from completely different expectations.”

That approach became increasingly important as Plescia Construction & Development grew. In the company’s earlier years, Plescia faced inconsistent deal flow, limited brand recognition, and the challenge of handling too many responsibilities himself.

He responded by investing in visibility through SEO, advertising, and industry involvement, while adding dedicated business development resources and strengthening internal systems. As the pipeline became more consistent, the focus shifted from simply creating opportunities to evaluating which opportunities best matched the company’s capabilities and standards.

For Plescia, that is an important stage in the development of any construction business.

“A better pipeline should create better choices,” he said. “Growth is not just about increasing the number of projects. It is also about improving the quality of the decisions you make before taking them on.”

Plescia’s interest in preparation also extends beyond construction. His background in mountaineering, rock climbing, aviation, skydiving, and rugby has reinforced the importance of evaluating conditions before committing to a course of action.

Those activities have also taught him that preparation does not eliminate uncertainty. Instead, it creates a stronger foundation for responding when conditions change.

He applies a similar approach to business by setting long-term targets, breaking them into weekly priorities, and tracking project and pipeline metrics. The goal is to keep decision-making grounded in information rather than reacting only when problems become urgent.

For Plescia, stronger construction outcomes are often shaped by work that happens quietly at the beginning. Clear scopes, realistic expectations, disciplined pricing, and honest communication may not be the most visible parts of a project, but they can influence everything that follows.

“Good execution is always important,” Plescia said. “But the best chance to execute well starts with making better decisions before the project gets moving.”
