Joseph Denick Debunks 5 Common Myths That Derail Skilled Trades Professionals and Small Business Owners

1
  • Joseph Denick, a state-licensed master plumber and owner of Clog Kings, LLC in Saint Petersburg, Florida, shares the truth behind widespread misconceptions in the trades.

The Myths That Hold People Back

Florida, USA, Aug 10, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — Skilled trades professionals and small business owners face a mountain of advice. Much of it sounds convincing. But Joseph Denick, who has spent nearly 25 years in the plumbing industry and built a company with over 1,200 five-star reviews, knows that some of the most popular beliefs are also the most misleading.

“Starting a business was learning on the fly. You’re balancing everything—family, goals, and the unknown,” Denick explains. Along the way, he identified patterns that trip up others in his field. Here are five myths that can derail your success, along with the facts and practical steps you can take today.

Myth 1: You Need a Perfect Plan Before You Start

Many aspiring business owners delay launching because they wait for the perfect business plan, the perfect market conditions, or the perfect skillset. This myth stems from fear of failure and the belief that everything must be flawless before taking the first step.

The truth is that real-world experience teaches faster than any plan. Denick worked as a plumber for approximately 15 years after high school, gaining hands-on field experience before starting his own business. He attended CAM Technical School, passed his state-licensed master plumber test, and then launched Clog Kings nine years ago.

“It was all hands-on. You learn fast when you’re out there every day solving problems,” he says.

Practical tip: Pick one small action you can take this week toward your goal. Schedule a licensing exam, call one potential customer, or draft a simple service menu. Movement beats waiting.

Myth 2: Marketing Gimmicks Are the Key to Growth

Many trades professionals believe that flashy advertising, complex social media campaigns, or expensive branding are required to grow a customer base. This myth persists because companies selling marketing services promote it heavily, and success stories often highlight viral campaigns.

Denick built his reputation through integrity and consistent service rather than gimmicks. His company focuses on treating customers fairly with the utmost integrity. That approach earned over 1,200 five-star reviews without relying on tricks or hype.

“I do my best to treat my customers fairly with the utmost integrity,” Denick notes.

Practical tip: Ask your last three customers for honest feedback. Use their words to improve your service and request a review if they are satisfied. Word of mouth built on trust outlasts any ad campaign.

Myth 3: Success Requires Sacrificing Family and Personal Life

The hustle culture myth tells entrepreneurs they must work 80-hour weeks and put personal life on hold to succeed. People believe this because high-profile business stories often emphasize extreme sacrifice, and early-stage businesses do demand intense effort.

Denick balances his business with being a father and husband. He describes his approach as chipping away at challenges as they come rather than burning out. His family remains at the center of everything he does, and he still finds time for martial arts training and community involvement.

“My family is at the center of everything I do,” he says.

Practical tip: Block one non-negotiable family or personal time slot in your calendar each week. Treat it like a client appointment. Protecting that time will make your work hours more focused and productive.

Myth 4: You Need a Complicated System to Handle Challenges

Business advice often promotes elaborate systems, software platforms, and multi-step frameworks for problem solving. This myth thrives because complexity can feel impressive and consultants profit from selling intricate solutions.

Denick follows a simpler philosophy. He relies on consistency, integrity, and patience rather than complicated techniques. When challenges arise, he tackles them one at a time without overthinking the process.

“No specific technique. I just chip away at everything as it comes,” Denick explains. “Consistency, integrity, patience. If you stick to those, everything else follows.”

Practical tip: When a problem appears, write down the single next action that will move it forward. Complete that action before adding layers of planning. Simple, consistent steps beat complex strategies every time.

Myth 5: Your Background Limits Your Potential

Many people assume that without an elite education, venture capital, or industry connections, they cannot compete. This myth discourages talented individuals who come from modest beginnings or non-traditional paths.

Denick grew up in Saint Petersburg, Florida, graduated from Pinellas Park High School, and entered the plumbing trade immediately. He worked in the field for 15 years, earned his master plumber license, and built a business that now serves the community with a stellar reputation. He also competed in over 20 kickboxing matches and earned three amateur world kickboxing titles, proving that discipline and persistence matter more than pedigree.

“Keep a consistent attitude,” he advises.

Practical tip: Identify one skill you already have from your background, whether it is hands-on work, sports discipline, or community relationships. Use that strength as your foundation instead of focusing on what you lack.

If You Only Remember One Thing

The common thread through all five myths is this: consistency, integrity, and action beat complexity, gimmicks, and waiting for perfect conditions. You do not need a flawless plan, expensive marketing, endless hours, complicated systems, or an elite background. You need to start, stay honest, and keep moving forward one step at a time.

Share This List and Take Action Today

If one of these myths has been holding you back, pick the practical tip that resonates most and try it today. Share this list with a friend, colleague, or family member who is building something of their own. The trades and small business community grow stronger when we replace myths with truth and support each other with honest advice.
